Edward Edwards’ House
About this project
Cilantro will deliver the turnkey MEP to 69 apartments (inc. guest suites) across 15 floors + Ground and 2 No. Basement Levels.
Having come through a successful Gateway 2 Application with our client JTRE, Cilantro are responsible for the design and installation of the entire MEP Package.
The development will create 64, 100% affordable homes for older people in Southwark. It replaces 25 almshouses built in the 1970s that were no longer fit for purpose. The site has been in continuous occupation as an almshouse since 1752 and the partnership with JTRE London has enabled Southwark Charities to continue providing affordable homes, whilst increasing the number of homes on the site by 156%.
Edward Edwards' House at 220 Blackfriars introduces a new model of almshouse design. Instead of the traditional horseshoe layout, the scheme will be delivered as a residential tower, which enables an increase in the number of affordable homes available on the site, with shared lounges, communal spaces and a roof terrace with views across the city. The homes will overlook a new publicly accessible garden, and the plans include a community centre to support stronger links between residents and the wider Southwark community.
220 Blackfriars will also provide a Charitable Hub, with a floor of the offices dedicated to affordable workspace for charities.
Coupled with the neighbouring commercial development, Cilantro are incredibly pleased and excited to be appointed onto this scheme by JTRE London.
